Older adults
They are not the group that files the most complaints. They are the group the scammers prize: digital-arrest gangs keep victims on video calls for hours until savings are transferred to “verify” them, and crimes against senior citizens rose nearly 17 percent in 2024. The money moves through mule accounts in minutes. Recovery is rare, and the police stations and cyber cells meant to help are overworked and out of jurisdiction.

Small businesses
Criminals target business accounts because the balances are larger and a fraudulent UPI transfer blends into the day’s volume. A spoofed supplier call becomes a payment that settles in seconds; a “KYC update” link becomes a drained current account. With no batch window and no fraud team, the business discovers it in the morning.

Communities on the grid
Power distribution depends on control systems designed for physical isolation that now sit on reachable networks. In October 2020, Mumbai went dark for hours, and investigators later found a state-sponsored group inside the grid’s IT environment. The households, hospitals and local trains downstream had no way to know. As the grid extends to 25 crore smart meters, rooftop solar and EVs, the attack surface reaches into homes no utility controls.
